The newest edition of Flatbush Girls JV Soccer found out Monday night (3/13) that it is a very competitive world in the Yeshiva League, as despite a strong effort put forth by the Falcons, they dropped their season opener to perennial League power Ma’ayanot by the score of 13-3 at the Aux Nest in Brooklyn, NY.
Ma’ayanot jumped out to the early lead and never looked back. Nevertheless, Flatbush battled hard throughout the entire game, with the home team getting two goals from Freshman Danielle Tawil and another goal from veteran Sophomore Raquel Oved.
Although it was a tough night, there were a number of bright spots for the home team. Sophomore Julie Saadia, after spending her Freshman season as a field player made the move to goalie, and as noted by Assistant Coach Evelyn Shterenzer, “her debut was amazing!” She was aided by solid defensive play from Jacqueline Mann. On the offensive side of the ball, rookies Mimi Sultan and Allie Saadia also played well.
The Falcons also learned that they had good overall leadership in hand with the strong presence of Sophomores Betty Greenberg, Linda Benun, Esther Hidary and Raquel Oved. That being said, this team found out that they still have much to learn and a lot of room for improvement if they hope to advance to the MYHSAL Playoffs come the end of the season.
The season opener was also an eye opener, but it will have been well worth it if the lessons learned result in a renewed effort in practices going forward.
NEST NOTES: the JV girls have a few days to work on making improvements. Their next game is set for Monday, 3/20, against another top-level team in SAR. The game is the second of a JV Boys/Girls doubleheader. The boys are scheduled for a 6:30 pm start, withe the girls to follow at approximately 7:45 pm.
