Girls Hockey Takes its First Steps at Flatbush

386 Reads

In a school year that has seen a great deal of “new” regrading hockey at Flatbush, add another item to that list – Girls Varsity Hockey!  A new gym geared towards floor hockey was unveiled in September, and for the first time the school put a competitive team of boys on the ice.  Now, the girls will have the chance to learn and play the game at a high level, with the goal to become a full-fledged member of the Yeshiva League Girls Hockey division in the near future.

The impetus for this program came from within the school’s revised Physical Education curriculum.  One of the new programs being taught to all of our students is floor hockey.  While this is not unfamiliar to the boys, for many of the girls it was the first time they had the opportunity to learn the game.  Under the tutelage of Physical Education teachers Lorelei Black and Barbara Stern, the girls were taught the basics.  All the while, a number became so enamored with the game, that they began searching for a way to play at a more advanced level.  With the support of Coaches Black and Stern, a new team was born in the equally new Aux Nest!

Through her connections, Coach Black pointed Athletic Director Eric Amkraut in the direction of Chelsea Donovan, an Ice Hockey coach at the rink where Coach Black’s daughter skates.  A former player herself, coach Donovan serves as the head coach for a number of club teams.  This would, however, be her first opportunity to coach a team made up entirely of girls.  After meeting with Coach Donovan, it was clear that the Falcons had found the right person to head up the new program at Flatbush. After her first practice session with the girls, Coach Donavan was impressed.  “What a great group of girls! They were completely engaged and eager to learn how to play. The plan now is to continue to build upon the skills they have and strive to become fierce competitors for next season. With that being said, we have our work cut out for us.  But, with hard work, dedication and fun our goals are more than attainable.”

The girls will continue to train weekly with Coach Donovan, who will be assisted by Coach Barbara Stern, with the goal of having a competitive team ready to play as early as next Spring.  If the girls are reader sooner, there is the possibility of a scrimmage or two this Soring against seasoned MYHSAL competition.
