The Flatbush Boys Varsity Tennis team took one big step towards achieving their ultimate goal of a league championship on Monday night (6/5) when they defeated the visiting Hillel Hurricanes in convincing fashion by a score of 4-1 at the MatchPoint USA satellite courts in the Mill Basin section of Brooklyn, NY.

The Falcons’ Senior leadership came to the fore, as the graduating members of the team were well aware that a loss would mark the end of their high school playing careers.  They also knew that the Hurricanes would present the toughest challenge the team would face talent-wise all season.

With the singles matches on one side of the racquet club and the doubles teams facing off on the opposite side, Flatbush took early leads in all five pairings, though it was soon clear that the points to be earned at 1st Singles as well as the two Doubles positions would be closely contested.

The first point of the match was delivered to Flatbush at 2nd Singles where Joe BenHaim closed out his Hillel opponent by a score of 10-2.  BenHaim employed a style of solidly returning each ball, looking to keep the ball in play, relying on his opponent to make the errors.  It worked perfectly for Flatbush.

Shortly after the end of Benhaim’s set, Meyer Kassin completed dispatching of his Hurricane counterpart with precision play, securing his point with a 10-1 win.

From there, things got interesting.  Flatbush held the 2-0 advantage, but the remaining three sets were all too close to call.  And, when Hillel secured the point in the 2nd Doubles contest by the narrowest of margins, 10-8 (Sam Torgueman and Ricky Esses had the early lead but could not hold off the late charge from Hillel’s 2nd Doubles grouping), the pressure on the players in the remaining two sets mounted exponentially.

Hillel needed to win both contests, while Flatbush needed only one more win to secure the match.  At 1st Singles, Meyer Tawil continued to show flashes of why he may be the most dangerous player in the MYHSAL, with a serve that explodes off his racquet and power drives that are very difficult to return.  But, his power comes at a price – a large number of unforced errors.  Which would win the day – accuracy for the Falcons or errors in favor of the Hurricanes?  Tawil held a slim lead at 6-4, and serving to maintain his cushion.

Meanwhile, the 1st Doubles team of Issac Sued and Michael Dayan were enmeshed in a similarly close contest.  The Falcon pair held a slim lead; could they maintain it?  The decisive point would ultimately come at 1st Doubles, as Sued and Dayan secured it by a score of 10-5.  With the match decided, Tawil made sure the victory was complete, closing out the final point at 1st Singles by a score of 10-8.
