The Flatbush Falcons Girls Varsity Softball team took a giant step towards securing a second consecutive MYHSAL playoff berth, defeating divsional rival Central Wildcats on Monday afternoon by a score of 9-5 at the 6 Diamonds Ballfield Complex in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn, NY.
The hot-hitting Frieda Abbetan set things in motion for the Falcons in the first inning, with a big hit, and along with one from Zoe Edery coupled with a walk to Sarah Horowitz, Flatbush jumped out to an early 3-1 lead.
Flatbush more than doubled their lead when they plated four more runs in the second inning, with Nanda Mosseri and Claire Lessler providing the power with a double and single respectively.
Defensively, Marlene Levy led the effort to restrict Central’s chances with 6 put outs, making Mosseri’s work on the mound that much easier. Central did manage to close the gap with three runs in the top of the seventh, but it was a case of too little., too late as Flatbush recorded the final outs to seal the 9-5 win.
NEST NOTES: Rookies Claire Lessler and Zoe Edery each punched three hits though the Wildcat defenses, tops for the Falcons.
The win in the final regular season game puts Flatbush at 5-3, and virtually assures the team of a third place seeding. Central is now at 4-3, with a final game to play against division-leading SKA. Even if Central wins, they finish tied with Flatbush, the Falcons would earn the 3rd Place spot in the division for playoff seeding by virtue of Monday’s win over Central.
Final playoff seedings will come out once the final regular season game is finished on Friday, 5/19.
