Boys Varsity Tennis · Boys Clinch Top Spot in MYHSAL East for 2nd Consecutive Season

The Flatbush Boys Varsity Tennis Team secured the top spot in the MYHSAL Eastern Division for the second year in a row with a straight sets victory over the HANC Hurricanes on Tuesday night (5/23) at Alley Pond Tennis Center in Queens, NY.

The boys traveled to Queens with the knowledge that a victory would secure the top spot in the division, while a loss would mean that the team would have to face off against DRS on Thursday with three teams still in contention for the two playoff spots: Flatbush, DRS and North Shore.  With the Falcons facing the Hurricanes with a depleted squad due to injuries and absences by the team’s regular starters at all the singles positions, the result was clearly in doubt at the outset.

But the doubt did not last long.  The reserves clearly stepped up!  Daniel Sitt faced the most difficult challenge, filling the shoes at 1st Singles.  Though he was pushed hard, he prevailed by the score of 10-6.  That set the tone for the Falcons on the evening.  Aaron Harari rose to the challenge at 2nd Singles, winning by a score of 10-4.  Issac Sued made it a clean sweep of the singles matches, taking 3rd Singles by a score of 10-2.

In doubles, the team of Isaac Sutton and Michael Dayan kept up their perfect record on the season, even though they jumped up from 2nd Double to 1st Doubles, taking care of the Hurricane 1st Double team by a score of 10-0.  The 2nd Doubles team of Teddy Betesh and Sam Cohen won their set in a walkover..

The effort put forth by the reserves secured a 5-0 final score, and a Flatbush victory!

NEST NOTES: The doubles team of Isaac Sutton and Michael Dayan lost a grand total of 4 games all season long!

The win meant the Falcons finished the regular season with a 7-0 record and secured the top position in the Eastern Division in the MYHSAL.  They will now face Hillel Yeshiva in the opening round of the MYHSAL Playoffs.  Hillel’s loss to Heschel in the final week of the season meant the New Jersey Hurricanes finished in 2nd Place in the Western Division, behind the Heschel Heat.  Heschel defeated North Shore in the other semifinal match and will await the winner of the Flatbush-Hillel contest.

Flatbush and Hillel will face off in their semifinal match on Monday night, 6/5, at the MatchPoint USA courts in the Mill Basin section of Brooklyn, NY.  Game time is 9:00 pm.
