With everything looking like roses, the season came to a crashing halt for the Flatbush Falcons Boys Varsity Softball team on Sunday afternoon (5/28) when the Hillel Hurricanes staged a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun the visiting Falcons and end their season with a devastating 2-1 playoff loss in the MYHSAL Quarterfinals in Deal, NJ.
Flatbush’s defense was on point all game, with Senior Pitcher Isaac Dweck in control from the outset. With solid defense behind him. Dweck set down the top-seeded Hillel Hurricanes inning after inning after inning.
Meanwhile, Flatbush managed to gain the slight advantage, taking the 1-0 lead when a double by Meyer Kassin put Falcon runners on second and third with less than two outs. The next batter, Alan Frastai, drove home the lone Falcon run with an RBI groundout.
With the way Dweck was pitching, it looked like the solitary run would be enough. But the wheels came flying off in the bottom of the final inning. With their backs to the wall, the Hurricanes drew a walk off of Dweck. The unthinkable then occurred. The sure-handed Falcon defense committed two consecutive errors. Hillel then connected for the big hit, a two-run single. As the home team, the two Hurricane runs sealed the fate of the Falcons, ending their dream season, and allowing Hillel to advance to the MYHSAL Semifinals.
NEST NOTES: For the second consecutive season, the Boys Varsity Softball team lost a quarterfinal contest in New Jersey.
The team will now graduate the majority of its roster, but will look to reload with a solid group of rising juniors to replenish the roster for Head Coach Howie Fleischman in the upcoming 2017-18 season.
