Multiple Teams · Varsity Falcons Put Season Opener in the Win Column

The Flatbush Boys Varsity Hockey team got the season started right, bringing home the “W” after defeating the Shaare Torah Stars on Tuesday night (10/31) by a score of 4-2 at the Coney Island Avenue school in Brooklyn, NY.

It was not a pretty game by any stretch of the imagination, but it was clearly one the Falcons will take.  After spending the better part of the game sizing each other up, the scoring began in earnest in the middle period.  With the score tied at 0-0, the host Stars caught the falcon defense off guard and took the early 1-0 lead.  It was as if a bell went off for Flatbush, as they finally woke up on offense and answered with three straight goals before the 2nd Period closed.  Ricky Esses evened things with an unassisted score.  Mark Shalam then gave Flatbush a lead they would never relinquish after being set up for the score by Eddie Sorscher.  Meanwhile, the defense settled in, with Goalie and team captain Sol Laniado blanking Shaare Torah for the rest of the period.  Mo Goldman then found the back of the net, giving Flatbush a 3-1 lead at the second intermission.

Both teams registered a score in the final period, with Steven Sutton collecting the final Falcon goal, icing the game with a backhanded flip past the Shaare netminder.

While not pleased with the overall effort of the team, Coaches Ruvin Levavi and Elliot Zakay focused on the takeaways from the game.  “Eddie Sorscher was a star for us tonight,” highlighted Levavi.  Zakay added, “Sorscher played with hustle and determination all night, controlling things on defense and contributing heavily on offense.”  Goldman was equally important to the Falcon effort, rotating between the forward and defense positions and registering around 7 shots on net.

“In general, we got the “W,” but the boys expect more from themselves,” shared Zakay. “Clearly there was loads of rust, and we need to build chemistry out there with guys adjusting to playing with new line mates.  I am confident we will get that complete effort the next time out.”
