The Flatbush JV and Varsity Girls Volleyball teams both brought their “A” service games as they each dispatched of their North Shore opponents in straight set fashion Tuesday night (11/7) at the Aux nest in Brooklyn, NY.
The JV girls came in riding on the wave of their winning performance at the Kushner Tournament over the weekend, and they kept up their winning ways against North Shore.
Rookie Ruthy Dwek gave Flatbush the early 3-2 lead. Fellow Frosh Rochelle Hafif then ripped of 5 consecutive points to push the Falcons’ lead to 12-6. Co-Captain Danielle Tawil followed that up with 7 service winners of her own, including 4 aces, en route to a 21-10 win in game 1.
Another Freshman, Sarah Benun, staked the Falcons to a 4-0 lead in set number two. The team of Adele Ayash and Benun came up with big volleys to add to the Falcons point total, but a run of 6 straight Stars points flipped the score in their favor 11-10. The deficit grew as great as four.
But, trailing 19-16, Flatbush took back control of the serve on a great return by Danielle Tawil, and the Falcons never let it go. Tawil served two points to tie the game at 19. Head Coach Irene Eisdorfer then subbed in Hafif for Tawil, and Hafif served out the game – and the match!
The Varsity Girls took the floor next, looking to finally break into the win column after starting the season with two consecutive losses.
Things did not look so good for Flatbush as North Shore jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, forcing Flatbush to play catch up. The serve fell to Sally Missry, and she immediately found a groove and served the Falcons even at 10 apiece. A run of Nanda Mosseri aces gave Flatbush its first lead at 14-13, and she continued to serve un-returnable balls for a 16-13 lead. Junior Julie Saadia came on as a sub and served the team to the brink of victory, and when a Vaysman/Missry return fell to the floor it provided the final point, giving the home team the 21-17 opening set win.
In the second set, a Marlo Dayon dig followed by a sweet Missry dunk gave Flatbush control. Then, 9 straight points off of net-skimming serves and solid aces by Michelle Dweck gave Flatbush a 13-6 lead. Missry followed suit with 5 straight service points, and Jessica Vaysman served them home for the 21-10 win in set two.
Set three saw Dayon, Victoria Haddad and Missry serve the Falcons to a 10-8 lead. But defensive misplays let the Stars swing things to 13-10 in their favor. Dweck served it back to Flatbush at 17-16. Again it was consistent and powerful serving that was key for Flatbush. With the home team trailing 20-19, the Falcons defense scored the equalizer and then Haddad delivered a big serve to shift the advantage to Flatbush. Tied at 21, the serve then fell to Missry, and she delivered! Two power serves left the Stars stunned, and lifted the Falcons to their first win of the season!
Afterwards, Coach Eisdorfer was beaming. “What a great effort, by both the JV’s and the Varsity,” she exclaimed. “I am so proud, Everyone got to play, everyone contributed, and we won!”
NEST NOTES: The Falcons will look to keep the momentum going when they again take the floor next Monday, 11/13, when the JV and Varsity teams host Central in a doubleheader. JV is scheduled to start at 7:15 pm, with the Varsity game to follow afterwards at approximately 8:30 pm.
