Multiple Teams · MD Hockey Falls Just Short in Quest for First Win

The Flatbush Middle School Boys Hockey Team nearly recorded their first win of the season on Saturday night (11/18), but the 3rd Period comeback by the Falcons went by the wayside when the visiting Barkai Blizzard notched the game winner in the final minutes for the 7-6 at the YoF High School Aux Nest in Brooklyn, NY.

The quest for that elusive first win of the season got off to an inauspicious start as the Falcons fell behind 2-1 to the Barkai hockey players in the first period.

Two Quick second period goals swung the lead in favor of Flatbush.  Barkai responded with a tying goal just under the 6 minute mark. After that, the play became fast and furious, with both teams having goals disallowed. Flatbush then scored the go-ahead goal at just under the three minute mark. Defensively, Flatbush came up with a big save on a Blizzard corner wraparound with 16 seconds left, then just missed on a goal of their own as the puck hit the post at .02 before the buzzer sounded.

After the quality play turned in by Flatbush in the middle period, the third period belonged to the Blizzard, as they pulled even on a shot that just bounced over the goalie’s stick, then went ahead on a shot that beat the Falcon defense with just over 6 minutes left in the game. It got worse after the teams switched ends when Flatbush’s defense could not clear the zone and the puck ended up behind the goalie for a seemingly insurmountable two goal cushion.  But, the Falcons did not bury their heads.  In 20 seconds time, Flatbush’s offense got one right back, then Barkai gave the hosts a gift when a defensive clear misfired and ended up in their own net.  With 5:00 to play, it was a brand new game with the teams even at 6-6.

At 3:20, a defensive error by the Falcons proved costly as again they could not clear the zone and Barkai made them pay.  It was the game winner.  Even though the Falcons continued to pound away at the Blizzard defense, a number of late rushes came up empty.  Flatbush came close, but not close enough.  Final score, Barkai 7, Flatbush 6.
