Multiple Teams · Middle Division Boys Make it a Clean Sweep in Brooklyn

Wednesday night (12/27) was a very busy one for the Flatbush Middle Division Boys, as all three levels of basketball teams were in action in Brooklyn, NY.  The 6th Grade Boys opened the night with a convincing win over the YDE Thunder at the YoF Elementary School Gym while the 7th and 8th Grade Boys played a doubleheader at Shaare Torah a short stretch down Coney Island Avenue, and took both ends with the 7th Graders winning handily while the 8th Graders won a close one.

The 6th Grade Boys took the opening tip to the house, with Isaac Cooper drawing the foul and converting the free throws for the first points of the game.  The Falcons were off and running, and built a 10-point cushion that they held at the end of the 1st quarter of play.  Head Coach Gus Kennedy’s boys put into practice the defense they were learning, and the backcourt pressure paid off, with the play of Ronnie Chaaya and Joey Hara leading to fast break opportunities.  Flatbush also dominated the rebounding game, with Darren Kassin controlling the ball inside on offense.  By halftime, the lead was 11, but Flatbush was confident and in control.

The second half saw Coach Kennedy and Assistant Coach Joey Dayon get playing experience for their reserves, and they rewarded their coaches’ confidence.  Dovid Israel hit the boards and scored a few points in the paint.  Meanwhile, in the backcourt Albert Shalom was all over the place, sacrificing his body for the ball and being a general nuisance to the YDE guards.  The Falcons won going away, 43-24.

Across town, the 7th Grade Boys got underway shortly after the 6th Graders, taking on the Stars in their home on Coney Island Avenue and Avenue N.  Falcons jumped out to an early 14-7 first quarter lead and extended the lead to 23-12 at halftime.  In the third quarter, the Flatbush pressure defense shut out Shaare Torah and Flatbush held a 37-12 lead after three.  In the fourth quarter, Flatbush continued to dominate and secured the victory.  Along the way, Head Coach Judah Rhine insured all on the roster had a role in contributing to the win, with almost every player scoring.

Capping off the night were the 8th Grade Boys, who had to battle foul trouble along with the opposing Shaare Torah Stars.  It looked like it might be an easy night for the Falcons as the boys jumped out to a 21-9 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.  That is when the fouls began to impact the Flatbush team play as leading scorer Abie Saada and Guard Morris Chaaya went to the bench with 2 fouls apiece.  By halftime, the Stars had closed the gap to 6, trailing the Falcons 26-20.  The second half was a close affair the rest of the way.  Flatbush did manage to rebuild a 9-point lead in the 4th quarter, but Shaare Torah would not go away.  Flatbush held on to win the game by the same 6-point halftime margin, 56-50.  With Saada in foul trouble all night, Steven Chetrit picked up the slack for Head Coach Mike Gelber’s boys, scoring 18 points for the visitors.  Irwin Azar added 15 points, Jacob Cohen played a solid Center all game long and scored 12 points.  Abie Saada finished with 9 points on the night.
