The Flatbush Ice Hockey team traveled to New Jersey on Monday night (1/1/18) to get in the first athletic contest of 2018, faacing off against the TABC Storm on the ice at Mackay Arena in Englewood, NJ.
This represented the team’s initial game in the newly formed MYHSAL Ice Hockey Division. Coordinated by Frisch Ice Hockey maven Ralph Abecassis, the League consists of six teams from within the larger MYHSAL, some of which include rosters that combine players from two or more member schools. Along with Flatbush (who’s team this season consists of a combined roster of Flatbush and Magen David Yeshivah student-athletes), the teams represent the following schools: Frisch, Ramaz, TABC, SAR and a final team combining players from Central Jersey’s JEC and Kushner.
With Flatbush Head Coach Ruvin Levavi manning the bench for the Falcons, he saw his boys boys put forth a very strong effort. Flatbush and TABC played a back-and-forth game for the first two periods, with the style employed by both teams being one of wide-open full-flowing play utilizing all of the ice. Flatbush was backstopped by Warrior Charles Michaels, who was sharp in net for the first two periods.
The defense was led by Falcons Senior Eddie Sorscher who played tough hockey as he strove to keep Michaels’ crease clear while anchoring the blue line on offense. Offensive production came from Falcons Freshman Joseph Maymie who notched two goals on the night, and Warrior Albert Hadef who registered a hat trick for Flatbush.
Unfortunately, the Storm broke the game wide open in the third and final period as the shorthanded Flatbush group wore down (a number of players were out due to injury while others were just unavailable), and their tired legs yielded a slew of lat TABC goals, leading to a final score of 14-5.
Though the score was not really indicative of the way the game was played for most of the contest, Coach Levavi saw strong positives to build on. “The boys really played hard out there, and they gave everything they had. Most importantly, they really had fun! I know that as we play the remainder of the games on the season, we will have our full roster on hand and we will challenge each and every time.”
NEST NOTES: The Flatbush squad has four games remaining on the schedule. They will next take to the ice at Mackay Arena (site of all League contests) on Sunday, February 11 when they will face the SAR Sting. The puck drops at 5:15 pm.
