Boys 8th Grade Basketball · Press Break Keys Runaway Win for 8th Grade Boys Basketball

On Wednesday night (1/3/18), the Flatbush 8th Grade Boys Basketball team avenged an earlier loss this season to the Magen David Warriors by dismantling their vaunted press and building an insurmountable 4th Quarter lead for a lopsided 67-41 victory at the YoF Elementary School Gym in Brooklyn, NY.

Flatbush got on the board with their first possession, but the game quickly settled in to a defensive battle.  Then, Morris Chaaya hit a three midway through to give the hosts a 7-2 lead. A Magen three at 37 seconds cut the lead to one point, and Flatbush answered with a Jacob Cohen free throw.  At the end of one, the score was 10-8 Flatbush.

Irwin Azar hit from outside to add to the Falcon lead just one minute in, then hit a floating banker to put Flatbush up 15-8, which led to a Warrior timeout.  After a single Warriors free throw, Abie Saada hit the next three straight hoops for Flatbush, pushing the lead to 10 at 21-9.    Magen went on a mini run to cut the deficit to 11 at 25-14 with under a minute left in the quarter, but the Falcon offense found David Ades underneath for an easy basket.  The teams went in the intermission with Flatbush in control, 27-14.

Flatbush gave the momentum away at the start with a turnover that led to a Warrior lay in.  Two Cohen free throws, followed by a Cohen finish on a drive, settled Flatbush down with a 31-16 lead.  Steven Chetrit then answered a Magen deuce with a finish inside off an assist from Azar.  But the Falcons got sloppy on the press break, and a Warriors lay in off another turnover cut the lead to 11 with 4:55 left in the quarter. It got worse, as another turnover out of the timeout let Magen close to 8 after converting the and-1.  A Saada free throw stopped the bleeding, and an Ades lay in got the lead back to double digits at 36-26. The ship was righted, and Flatbush shortly extended the lead to 44-26 by the end of the quarter.

Chetrit turned up the defense with three blocks, then scored three points to match to start the final period of play.  The reserves extended the lead some more, with Marvin Ebani scoring 7 himself, including 5-6 shooting from the free throw line.  The Falcons closed out the big win, 67-41.

NEST NOTES:  David Ades led all scorers on the night with a career high 14 points.  Abie Saada added 12 points.  Irwin Azar scored 11 points.  Morris Chaaya put in 9 points, while Jacob Cohen and Marvin Ebani each recorded 7 points.  Steven Chetrit scored 5 points and Lawrence Dweck hit a jumper for 2 points to round out the Falcon scoring.

The 8th Grade Boys return to action on Monday night, January 8th, when they will take on Derech HaTorah in the second game of a 6th Grade/8th Grade doubleheader.  Tip off is at approximately 8:15 pm.
