The Flatbush 8th Grade Girls Basketball team enjoyed some victory ice cream on Wednesday night (1/10) after recording a 45-42 road win over Yeshiva Har Torah in Queens, NY.
Flatbush was on fire to start the game and opened up an early lead courtesy of the hot hand of Alexa Greenstein and a strong team defensive effort. But, Har Torah soon found a groove on offense, pulling even by the end of then opening quarter. The Queens team kept the momentum going, eventually turning what had been a 12-point deficit into a 6-point lead. Flatbush began to rush things on offense which led to sloppy passing and off-target shooting. To compound the issue, the Falcons had begun to accumulate fouls, forcing key players to the bench.
The third quarter saw Flatbush begin to right the ship, with Head Coach Rozan Mizrahi encouraging her backcourt players to put the pressure on “full court style,” and it paid off. Eliana Brand and Leah Hamoui led the defensive attack. Flatbush was able to convert turnovers into points, and the two teams were now locked in a back-and-forth battle exchanging 2 to 4 point leads. With the game tied in the 4th quarter, Norma Mattout hit a 3-pointer, but Har Torah answered right back with one of their own. The teams then traded lay ups, keeping the game even with time beginning to run out. The Falcons had the ball, and they again found Mattout open beyond the three-point arc. She let the ball fly, and drew nothing but the bottom of the net! The Falcons applied full court pressure, denying Har Torah any chance of hitting a last-second game-tying shot. Flatbush had closed out the uplifting victory, 45-42!
NEST NOTES: Norma Mattout led all scorers with 23 points. Alexa Greenstein hit for 11 points. Eliana Brand added 5 points. Lynn Franco scored 4 points. Leah Hamoui rounded out the scoring with 2 points.
