On Thursday night (2/1), the Flatbush Boys Varsity Basketball team turned an 11 point first half deficit into a 16 point win, turning what looked like it would be a most devastating defeat into a win that appears to have vaulted the Falcons into the MYHSAL Playoffs, defeating the YDE Thunder by a score of 66-50 at the Sephardic Center in Brooklyn, NY.
The Flatbush Varsity looked every bit the rusty squad that had not played a meaningful game in nearly a month, as YDE jumped ahead early in the first quarter on the heels of very accurate shooting from 3-point range, jumping out to a large 19-10 lead.
YDE continued its strong play in the second quarter, while Flatbush struggled to make stops on defense and just could not find any continuity on offense. Each Falcon felt the game slipping away, and looked to be the player that flipped the script. As a result, they began breaking from the team concept, trying to do much on offense, and to do it on their own. Fortunately they only trailed by 9 at halftime 30-21.
Halftime was key, and Head Coach Michael Gurock made it count. The message was simple. Tighten up the defense, and overall stay with the team framework all around on both sides of the ball – offense and defense. Eddie Lincer responded (22 points on the night), as he got himself going in the third, along with fellow Junior Joe Kattan. The defense – primed by the play of Jack Mishaan on the low block – made things tougher for the Thunder, and little by little Flatbush cut into the deficit, making the score 45-44 in favor of YDE at the end of the third quarter.
The Thunder were reeling, and Flatbush kept the pressure on. The 4th quarter was all Falcons. Flatbush went a 22-5 run to end the game. Maurice Mosseri sparked things at both ends, and Jack Rosow had some key rebound put backs in scoring 13 points. The Falcons pulled their season back from the edge of the abyss, turning defeat into a rousing victory, pulling away for the 66-50 win.
NEST NOTES: The win moves the Varsity Boys record to 6-7 on the regular season, with one game left to play. The Falcons will close out the 2017-18 regular season on Thursday, February 8, against DRS. A win over the Wildcats will secure a .500 record and fifth place in the Eastern Division of the MYHSAL.
The game is Senior Night, the final home game for the Senior Class members of the Flatbush Falcons, and is scheduled for an approximate start time of 8:45 pm in the Falcons Nest.
