With a playoff spot on the line, the Flatbush Varsity Girls Basketball Team traveled into the eye of the Hurricane Thursday night (2/1) and came out victorious, defeating HANC on their home court by a score of 47-29 in Uniondale, NY.
With so much riding on the game, the pressure was clearly on the shoulders of the Varsity players. It showed in the play of both Flatbush And HANC, as both squads struggled to get any offense going for the first few minutes. Flatbush got it’s first spark from Renee Kubie when she hit a deep three coming right off the bench. She followed it immediately with a second three-pointer, putting the Falcons up 6-0 and prompting a Hurricane time out.
HANC changed up their defense, but Esther Habert did not falter in her short jumper giving the falcons an 8-0 lead. But it was not likely that the Falcons would not hold them scoreless, and the Hurricane’s primary shooter started to get hot. The Falcons kept their cool, though, and kept the pressure on. That trademark pressure payed its usual dividends, the defense being rewarded with easy layups. With the entire team contributing in the first half, both offensively and defensively, Flatbush had a bit of a comfortable lead at intermission.
However, the same would not be true of the second half. HANC took advantage of the break and intensified their man-to-man defense, pressing the Falcons full court for the rest of the game. It was a great strategy that proved beneficial for them as they cut their deficit down to 4 points. After a quick time out by Head Coach Rozan Mizrahi to calm Flatbush and review a few plays to break down the HANC defense, Co-Captain Jacqueline Mizrachi connected to Sarah Gammal for a beautiful layup. Although she missed the shot, she drew a foul on their best defensive player, resulting in the HANC coach taking her out of the game for the remainder of the third quarter. That change allowed Co-Captain Marlene Levy to take full advantage, scoring from the field and getting to the line easily while also distributing the ball for key baskets. As a result, the Flacons pushing their lead out to 10 points by the end of the quarter.
The Falcons played disciplined basketball in the fourth, slowing the game down entirely and forcing HANC to extend their defense and play even higher. With two consecutive baskets from Frieda Abettan, who turned in her best performance of the season while playing the entire second half without a break, Flatbush locked down the lead. They closed out the win going away, 47-29, and secured that coveted playoff berth!
