Girls Junior Varsity Basketball · JV Falcons Fly High in Season Finale

The Flatbush Falcons Junior Varsity Girls Basketball team played with energy and intensity all night long on Wednesday night (2/7), and it paid off as they pulled away late to close out the Central Wildcats in the final game of the regular season, 37-23, at the Falcons Nest in Brooklyn, NY.

Flatbush started things with a bang, as Lorraine Levy took a pass off the opening tip and hit a jumper to open the scoring.  The Falcons scored on three of their first four possessions, and the defense kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard for over five minutes.  A deep three from Central late in the period made it a three point game at the quarter break.  The score stood 8-5 Flatbush after one quarter of play.

Two Flatbush turnovers turned into a pair of easy Wildcat breakaway layups, giving Central their first lead of the game. But, Flatbush answered right back with baskets from Marcy Ashear and Stephanie Mugrabi to retake the lead.  Late baskets from Esther Benjamin and Terri Ellman gave Flatbush a 7-point lead with under a minute to play in the half.  Cynthia Hamoui corralled a rebound at the buzzer to preserve that lead, and Flatbush was up 18-11 at halftime.

Points were hard to come by at the start of the third quarter, with only a Mugrabi jumper registering a score for either team four minutes in.  By the end of the quarter, Flatbush managed only a pair of hoops in total, while Central got three shots to drop.  With one period left to play, Flatbush’s lead was down to 22-17.

The stinginess of the baskets changed immediately, as Ashear stole the inbounds and broke for the basket, hitting the lay in to swing the momentum heavily in the Falcons favor.  After another Ashear basket, Central called timeout with 6:52 left and trailing 26-17.  Central soon got the ball to fall, but Flatbush answered by tightening up the defense and finding Ashear again on the offensive end for three more scores.  With 1:31 to play, Flatbush held a 30-23 advantage. Another Ashear lay in, this time off the in bounds was the clincher.  A Levy buzzer beating three a little over a minute later was just icing on the cake.

Rabbi Besser congratulates Lorraine Levy after she hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the game

The Falcons closed out Central by the final score of 37-23, finishing the 2017-18 regular season on a very high note!

NEST NOTES:  Flatbush was led in scoring by Marcy Ashear’s 18 points.  Lorraine Levy hit for 7 points.  Terri Ellman scored 6 points, Stephanie Mugrabi scored 4 points and Esther Benjamin rounded out the scoring with 2 points.
