The Flatbush Girls Varsity Soccer Team notched a big road win on Tuesday night (4/17), defeating the HANC Hurricanes by a score of 5-4 at the home court of the Long island, NY school.
With veteran goalkeeper Renee Gindi unavailable, the challenge fell to Junior Julie Saadia, and she showed that she was ready from the outset. With Betty Greenberg and Vivianne Durzie helping keep the defensive zone as clear as possible, they set the stage for the offense to take the lead. The Falcons did just that, with Esther Hidary giving the visitors from Brooklyn the early lead. Brenda Tawil scored to double the Flatbush total. But, the hurricanes scored a pair of their own in the opening half, and the teams headed to halftime with the score tied, 2-2.
HANC pressed the advantage, and took their first lead of the game at 3-2. Flatbush responded though, with Ruthie Soffer scoring to even the game at 3-3. Again, the host Hurricanes scored to regain the lead; again Flatbush responded to pull even – this time with a second strike by Hidary. With the clock winding down in regulation, the game was still even at 4-4. Saadia was sharp in the goal, and defender Linda Benun helped her to continue to deny the Hurricanes. With less than three minutes to play, Tawil came through with her second goal of the game. It would prove to be the difference maker, as Saadia and the Flatbush defense denied HANC the rest of the way, securing the hard-fought 5-4 road win.
NEST NOTES: The victory puts the varsity Falcons back over the .500 mark, at 3-2 on the season. They will look to make it two in a row when the travel back to Long Island for a Sunday afternoon contest with SKA. The April 22 contest is slated for a 3;00 pm start in Long Beach, NY.
