The Flatbush Girls Varsity Softball Team played extra ball on Sunday afternoon (5/6), and when all the dust had settled, the Falcons had completed a sweep of the North Shore Stars with an extra-innings 11-8 win in game 1 that was followed up by a 13-8 win in game 2 at the Kaiser Park Fields in Brooklyn, NY.
Game 1 picked up where it had left off, with Flatbush holding a 7-5 lead and North Shore coming to bat in the bottom of the fourth inning. But it was the bottom of the 6th that almost did in the Falcons. Clinging to the slim lead, Flatbush yielded two runs to the Stars, and the game was tied. It was still that way after the finish of the 7th inning, and the teams moved on to extra innings. In the top of the 8th inning, Flatbush broke the tie when Regina Saada singled on an 0-2 pitch to drive in the go ahead run. Flatbush would score three more times to go up 11-7. That brought up North Shore, and the Stars put up a challenge. They soon pushed a run across the plate to begin to close the gap, but Mosseri stood tall on the mound, and the Falcons squelched the rally, finally closing out the win by a score of 11-8.
It capped a solid offensive performance for the Falcons, who were paced over the course of the two day game by the hitting of Claire Lessler, who collected 4 hits in 6 at bats in the game.
After a short break, Game 2 was soon underway, this time with Flatbush as the home team. North Shore wasted no time in looking to get even on the day, plating a run in the top half of the inning. Flatbush came right back in the bottom half, though, scoring the tying run on a Stella Lessler single off the first pitch she saw. Even up at the top of the second, North Shore scored another run to take back the lead. Again, flatbush answered, this time on a blast from Marlene Levy who circled the bases for a home run. It was the fourth inning that was the decisive one, as Flatbush scored three times to get some distance on the Stars. The outburst was keyed by another Levy run-scoring hit followed by a big hit off the bat of fellow Senior Frieda Abettan. Flatbush added to their lead with a 5-spot in the bottom of the 5th inning, as the Falcons got RBI hits from Levy and Lessler along with ones from Regina Saada and Esty Vizgan.
Over the course of the game, Flatbush collected 20 hits, with Levy, Lessler and Abettan slugging 4 hits apiece. With Mosseri having pitched in the opening game, the Falcons looked for reserve pitchers, and found some success from Abettan – who started the game – and from Levy, who proved to be rather adept at throwing strikes. It was a quality performance, considering it was her first time hurling pitches in a game situation. In the end, it was a big win for the Falcons, topping North Shore by a score of 13-8 to complete the doubleheader sweep.
NEST NOTES: The wins move the Flatbush Girls Softball team to 3-0 on the season. They will look to stay unbeaten when they take on the SKA Lightning on Wednesday afternoon out on Long Island. Game time is scheduled for 6:30 pm in Hewlett, NY.
