The 2018-19 Flatbush Athletic Season got its official start on Wednesday evening (9/5) as four separate teams (Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball, Girls Varsity Volleyball & Boys Varsity Football) held their initial tryouts, and the excitement continued on Thursday night (9/6) as JV & Varsity Boys Hockey joined in the fun.
Even though Wednesday was just the first day of classes for the Falcons, Flatbush’s student-athletes wasted no time getting a good sweat going as Juniors and Seniors took to the basketball courts in both the High School and the Elementary School, attacked the volleyball net in the High school’s Laniado Auxiliary Gym and took off downfield to corral the deep ball on the football field at Marine Park. In each venue, the Falcons looked to make a positive impression on their respective team coaches. Flatbush Athletic Director Eric Amkraut was on hand at the venues to observe the initial steps taken in the new Athletic season. “It was great to see our Seniors begin to assert themselves in leadership roles, and it was equally exciting to see the Juniors get their first taste of Varsity competition,” noted the invigorated Mr. Amkraut.
The players shared the enthusiasm. “I just love the energy on the court,” noted returning Senior Volleyballer Sally Missry who was also fueled by the “guest coach” who joined in the fun (thank you, Rabbi Beyda!).
Senior Football Captain Sol Laniado was equally pumped up about the prospects for the Football team’s second season of competition. “Last year was fun, but with a year of experience under our belts I really believe we can go far this season.”
Thursday added to the tryout excitement. While the Varsity Boys Basketball coaches began the daunting task of narrowing down the roster towards its final numbers with their second day of tryouts, the Boys Hockey program took its first steps towards competition as their tryouts got underway. under the watchful eyes of new Head Coach Elliot Zakay, the JV’s went through their paces, followed shortly thereafter by the Varsity hopefuls. Said one JV hopeful, “this was a great atmosphere. There were so many guys looking to make the team, and the energy was really high!”
Competition is underway, and the games are not far off. GO FALCONS!!!
